Second Grade
Second grade is an adventure in learning! In our Math lessons, we strengthen our addition and subtraction skills, tackle fractions, and explore multiplication and division. We also use our competitiveness to "race" classmates in math drills. Our Language Arts lessons help us learn how to identify nouns, verbs, and adjectives. We also become budding authors as we create different genres of poems and write original stories. By the end of the year, we’ll be writing in cursive. We complete four fun and interesting book reports as we explore biographies, fiction, and non-fiction books. Our class has the opportunity to learn how our great country began and about many American heroes from the Revolutionary times. Have you ever fed a giraffe? We will! On a field trip to Wild Animal Safari, we’ll feed giraffes, water buffaloes, zebras, and many other animals. In our reading units, we learn about comparing and contrasting, finding the main idea, summarizing what we read, and how to determine the plot and setting of a story. We read some great novels throughout the year. Each day finds us working hard, but also having a great time! We are building a strong educational foundation on our second grade adventure.
In addition to academics, your second grader will also participate in:
Bible (Weekly)
Bible classes are held four times weekly. During this time, students are introduced to different choices made by Biblical characters from David to Esther with both good and bad results and how they can apply them to their relationships with family and friends.
Chapel (Weekly)
Students participate in chapel each Friday. During this time they have the opportunity to further strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ through praise and worship time and Bible lessons, and life lessons presented in a fun, uplifting manner.
Physical Education (Weekly) Students participate weekly in a physical education program that focuses on gaining an understanding of the importance of and gaining an appreciation for physical fitness and life long wellness. Units include:
Developing Fitness Awareness
Object Control Skills (catching, throwing, kicking, punting)
Specific Motor Abilities (balance, quickness, power, coordination)
Combination Body and Object Control Skills (game and sport activities).
Art (Weekly)
Students participate weekly in an art program that focuses on the basic principles (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, pattern) and elements (rhythm, balance, unity, variety, emphasis, proportion) of art. They gain an introductory knowledge of different artistic styles, an appreciation for the work of many famous artists, and an excitement in seeing their own creative work.
Music (Weekly)
Students participate weekly in a music program that exposes them to many different styles of music, introduces them to musical instruments and reading music, and gives them an opportunity to express themselves through music. They also will participate in a musical performance.
Library (Weekly)
Students attend the school library weekly in order to learn to appreciate and use the resources available there. Students are taught how to use an atlas, encyclopedia, newspaper, phone book, the OPAC, and magazines. In addition each student is permitted to select a book each week to read in their leisure time.
